About this guide

Batting 1000! One day I just decided that I would hit over 1000 with
every character in the Home Run Contest. I wondered if it was even
possible, but I managed to pull it off with everyone! I figured I'd
share my knowledge of how to do it with this guide. I will list my
current records for each character as well as my total combined score
so you can compete against me if you want.

1. Update History

1/06/02 - Version 1.00: Initial version. No revisions.

1/13/02 - Version 1.10: I got tons of e-mail about Roy, so I went, set a new
record for myself and redid the whole strategy. Someone sent me an e-mail about
a tachnique called the hard hit. I knew this existed, but never knew the
procedure for it. Changed strategy for Donkey Kong as well, kills my old
record. Also fixed other presumptions I've made.

2. Home Run Basics and General Strategy

The Home Run contest is in the Stadium feature in Super Smash Brothers
Melee. The idea is to pick up a home run bad and hit the sandbag as
many feet as you can within 10 seconds. In order to do this, you'll
need to do damage to the bag without letting it touch the floor off of
the platform. All characters have ways of doing this, you just need to
figure out what moves do what. Here are some things that are important
to know about the Home Run Contest:

1.      You'll usually hit over 1000 if the bag is at 92% or above.
2.      Hitting the sandbag at the maximum distance you can (the edge of
the bat) increases the distance you send the bag. Or if you hit the bag when
it's right above you, and you don't hear a whistle, that's a hard hit and
usually
sends the bag farther.
3.      Always grab the bat first (for most characters, at least), it saves time.

This guide is intended to give the ways to hit the sandbag as far as
possible with all 25 characters, not only to hit over 1000 feer. Okay,
let's get swingin'!

3. Character Strategy

a. Bowser

Bowser is fairly simple, and you will find most of these strategies
similar to what he must do. Grab the bat and immediately dash right
next to the bag. Juggle the bag 5 times in the air with Smash Up+A.
Make sure that you do NOT charge it or you wont be able to hit it. As
the bag begins descending after the fifth hit, step back a bit so you
can hit with the edge of the bat. Make sure you swing before time runs
out, Bowser has a pretty long windup, so make use of it. If you hit the
bag with the bat on the right spot it should go at least 1060.

My Record: 1358.9 Ft.

b. Captain Falcon

Seemingly impossible, but not so! Grab the bat and immediately rush in
with his Toward+B move. As the bag is flaming, smash the bat but DO NOT
hold the button, he should pull the bat back after a forward thrust
doing around 30 something damage. Continue this until time is almost
out. Get as close to the bag as you possibly can and nail it with a
Falcon Punch.

My Record: 1300.2 Ft.

c. Donkey Kong

Grab the bat and immediately headbutt (toward+B). Throw the bat at the bag
twice (using toward+z). When the bag lands, headbutt again, toss the bat at
the bag three times, and as the bag flies into the air, jump and slam it down
with a jumping down+A. Position yourself at maximum distance from the bag and
swing. Watch the bloody thing soar.

My Record: 1815.3 Ft.

d. Dr. Mario

Oddly enough, you hit it farther with Doc than you can with normal
Mario. Grab the bat, turn around and throw a pill. Dash in right next
to the bag and swing the cape 4 times. Dash in again, hit with the cape
4 times. Throw two pills, walk up and swing. Damage should be at 115%.

My Record: 1274.6 Ft.

e. Falco

With Falco, you must run nezt to the bag, do s short jump and press
down+A while you're in your hop. Try holding down instead of pressing
it or you'll drop to the ground fast. That four times, then smash up+A,
but don't charge it. It should go behind you. Turn around and smash
Up+A again. As the bag descends behind you again, turn around and home
run the bag.

My Record: 1258.2 Ft.

f. Fox

Fox is probably the first one anyone hit over 1000 with, but for
maximum distance, hit the bag with toward+a with the bat, dash so
you're just within swinging distance. Fire your blaster continuously
for the time remaining. Your goal is to get the damage above 75% before
swinging, so stop at about the last second, then swing.

My Record: 1302.5 Ft.

g. Gannondorf

Gannondorf hits and he hits hard. Real hard. Start as always by
grabbing the bad, dashing into the bag and smash Up+A. As the bag
descends, you'll want to jump and hit with down+a in the air, try
holding down before you jump so you don't drop right to the gound. When
you hit with down+A in the air, the bag will land solidly on the ground
standing upright, charge your smash up+A for about half a second, as
the bag comes down, read your next jumping down+A, take a quick step
back to swing and watch it soar over 1500 feet.
My Recors: 1661.8 Ft.

h. Ice Climbers

Ice Climbers can be a little tricky to do this with. You'll have to use
your non-smash up+A move for this, but you have to do it without
jumping first, it can be done from a standing position, though with a
little work, but for best results, grab the bat and rush in with a
toward+B move while holding up. Press up+A to use the spinning hammer
and the juggle the bag with that intil about 80% or so. Position
yourself accordingly and swing. The best thing about the Ice Climber
swing is that when you smash the bad swing, Nana will swing her hammer
and Popo will follow suit with the bat right after, giving it extra
damage before it sails away.

My Record: 1226.4 Ft.

i. Jigglypuff

Dash right and smash up+A continuously until time is almost out, you
can charge some of these hits because Jigglypuff doesn't send it very
high. On it's last descent, position yourself directly under the bag
and swing as it is about to touch your head, you should hear a slam
instead of a whistle. It should head right over 1200 if you did it right,

My Record: 1277.0 Ft.

j. Kirby

Doing this with Kirby is massively annoying and very frustrating. You
must use his jumping hammer (toward+B in the air. This move is very
sporadic and will often send the bag where you don't want it to go.
Nonetheless, you have to use it. Dash in and jump vertically and press
toward+B in the air, continue this until the damage is about 75-80% and
then smash the bag with the bat. Hopefully the last jump landed the bag
right in front of you.

My Record: 1095.1 Ft.

k. Link

Link is an interesting one, and quite a lot of fun too. Grab the bat
and smash throw the boomerang at the bag. Jump over the bag and on your
way down smash throw the boomerang again. Here, shoot an arrow at the
bag and jump over the bag again and smash throw the boomerang. Continue
jumping over and smash throwing the boomerang until time is almost out,
approach the bag and swing.

My Record: 1147.0 Ft.

l. Luigi

Luigi is very simple. Grab the bat and dash in. Smash down+A 5 times.
His sweep will send the bag upwards vertically only. After the fifth
sweep, shoot two fireballs at the bag, make sure you're at optimal
swinging distance, and home run the bag.

My Record: 1154.2 Ft.

m. Mario

Very similar to the procedure listed for Dr. Mario, with some minor
differences. Grab the bat and shoot 2 fireballs at the bag, dash in and
do four toward+b. Dash again and do as many as you can before letting
it fall of the ledge. The damage should be about 80% if you did it
exactly right. Hit the bag at 80%.

My Record: 1101.7 Ft.

n. Marth

Marth is very tricky. You MUST know how to short jump to pull this off.
Garb the bat and short jump forward with up+A 3 times, after that, use
hide Up+A move 3 times, and as the bag falls, stand directly under it
and swing before it reaches your head.

My Record: 1340.9 Ft.

o. Mewtwo

A minimum of 97% damage is needed for Mewtwo to send it over 1000 feet.
To do this, dash in with the bat and smash up+A. Do this 3 times, see
if you can charge it a little bit. You want it to come down at 42-44%.
From here, do toward+B until the damage is at 77-79% and home run the
bag. It should barely make it across 1000.

My Record: 1039.4 Ft.

p. Mr. Game and Watch

Hard. Very very hard. No character is more difficult to do this with
then Game and Watch. Game and Watche's moves send things flying all
over the place, and you can't expect to do a lot of damage with
sausages now. Grab the bat and smash Up+A, the bag will move forward a
little. Dash up to it and do this again, and make sure you charge until
it reaches your head. Continue this method onto the field. Once you hit
the bag up while standing on the field, position yourself under the bag
again and non-smash Up+A. He should hit with the flag. Now you have to
hit it with the edge of your bat, so get into a good position. It's
very hard to pull this one off, and I don't know how I got my record
below.

My Record: 1211.9 Ft.

q. Ness

A little difficult, but only because of control problems. Garb the bat,
and hit it with a non-smash toward+A. Thrown a PK Fire and jump in with
down+A. Do the fire jump/down+A procedure 3 times. Position yourself
and swing away.

My Record: 1063.6 Ft.

r. Pichu

Very easy. After grabbing the bat, shoot two Thunder Jolts (Neutral+B)
at the bag. Dash right in and juggle the bag with 3 thunders (Down+B).
Move behind the bag quickly as it falls and swing the bat at it.

My Record: 1092.8 Ft.

s. Pikachu

Grab that bat and stroll up to the bag. Have Pikachu's back face it.
Smash Up+A. He should hit it sending the bag up vertically. Do this
until the damage is at about 57%. As the bag comes down, shoot 2
Thunder Jolts at it. Run up and swing the bat.

My Record: 1038.0

t. Peach

Start by dashing in and smash Up+A. Do this 3 times. As the bag lands
after the third hit, crouch and press A. Do this twice. As the bag
descends, jump and pres down+A doing Peach's bicycle kick twice.
Position yourself and swing away.

My Record: 1334.0 Ft.

u. Roy

After spending a lot of time getting a record I was satisfied with
beat the records I saw in my 25+ emails, I changed this ;-). Okay,
ignore the bat totally. Start off right away with a 2-hit toward+B.
That should do 10% damage. Rush right in and use his Up+A move. As
the bag falls, charge until it reaches where the sword will hit for
all it's hits (if you know Roy well enough, you'll know how to do this).
Charge again, but this time, time it so that it's a full charge for max
hits. If at this point the timer has already said "4" start over. The
sword takes exactly 4 seconds to charge, so make sure you start charging
the sword by exactly 4 seconds remaining. Thanks everyone!

My Record: 1744.4 Ft.

v. Samus

Grab the bad and hit the bag with toward+A, as you're in the move, hold
up. While holding up, press the A button to do a hammer kick. The bag
will bounce straight up with little vertical distance. Continue this
until time is just about up. Samus has a lightning fast swing (which
you could probably abuse in fights), so be sure to take note of that
before you try swinging at the last second.

My Record: 1128.6 Ft.

w. Yoshi

Yoshi is the only character that can break the 2000 mark. Short jump
and press down+A as you're coming down, you'll do about 36%-40% damage
if done properly, continue doing this as much as you can. After you're
done, back off a little, swing, and watch the bag soar.

My Record: 2457.1 Ft.

x. Young Link

See Link, it's the exact same procedure.

My Record: 1225.7 Ft.

y. Zelda/Sheik

As soon as you grab the bat, transform into Sheik. Immediately rush in
an smash Up+A, you should be close enough to do two hits that total 28%
damage. As the bag comes down, smash Up+A again, doing 2 more hits, do
this one more time after that, feel free to charge your smash attack
just a little bit if you're feeling lucky. Transform back into Zelda
while the bag is in the air. The bag should land on the edge of the
platform. Crouch and press A to do a low kick, do this 3 times, but
make sure the bag is on the platform when you do. After all that is
said and done, swing.

My Record: 1283.8 Ft.

Well, there you have it. The best way to hit over 1000 with all
characters. I hope you found it useful! If you have any ways to improve
upon the procedures above and/or have a better way of doing it with a
specific character(s), please e-mail me at BigJoe7x7@aol.com and you
will be given credit for it once proven.
